Vesa Toskala Out For The Season
Speculation has been proven correct.
The Maple Leaf goaltender will be put on the IR and have season-ending hip surgery.
This explains the Gerber pickup off waivers. What I don't understand is if the Leafs knew this was coming why a) they played Toskala last night against New Jersey where he was forced to make 50 saves and b) why they feel like they needed to pick up Gerber anyways instead of just playing Pogge who will be a free-agent (restricted) after this season.
This would have be the perfect win-win situation for Toronto. Either Pogge tanks and the Leafs gain ground in the John Taveres sweepstakes, or Pogge plays well and the Leafs find their goaltender of the future.
If Gerber is only a stop-gap for this year anyway, why not give the young kid a chance to play every night and see what he's got? They need to make a decision on him one way or another, this was the chance to make it once and for all.
